Has IPY Achieved It and Will It Endure?

Abstract:

The International Polar Year represents an ambitious attempt
to develop a comprehensive understanding of polar regions even as those
regions undergo substantial and surprising changes. Geophysical
systems, including ice sheets, permafrost, sea ice and the large scale
circulations of atmosphere and ocean, sit at the centre of the problem,
but the impacts propagate and amplify through biological and social
systems. IPY represents an opportunity and an urgency to develop
enduring linkages across these areas of science and to convey powerful
messages about science and about the planet to the public.
