From Mobile Objects over Mobile Operating Systems, Grids, and into the Future

Abstract:

I will start by talking about how Concurrency and Distributed Systems have been active research areas at DIKU for more than thirty years. From using Concurrent Pascal over a 1 kilobyte/second serial line to today's massive Grid systems connected by 10 gigabyte/second fiber optic networks. The research in Concurrency has progressed into object mobility, Distributed Shared Memory systems, and on to Grid Systems employing Operating Systems that can migrate from machine to machine.

I then take a peek at what the future holds: The advent of multi-core CPUs and the practical impact of the subtle changes in Moore's Law combined with the advent of sensors everywhere will have a large effect on distributed systems and the services that they provide.

After the talk there will be a reception.

Eric will continue to be associated with DIKU as a Professor Emeritus.
