A history of compilers

Talk by Peter Sestoft, IT University of Copenhagen, Friday February 21st at 15:00-16:00.

We give some highlights of the historical development of compiler technology and its co-evolution with programming languages, hardware, and intermediate languages. Most emphasis is on early developments, including Fortran and Algol, and the different approaches taken by US and European projects, with some extra attention to the Nordic countries. A few other historical insights arosing from the investigations will be mentioned.

Peter Sestoft is a professor at the IT University of Copenhagen, where his interests include functional and managed object-oriented programming languages and their implementation, program transformation, program specification, software development, and bioinformatics.
