Introduction: In Denmark 100.000 patients are currently in oral anticoagulation therapy (OAT). The therapy prevents coagulation; it reduces the blood from clotting. There are different ways to manage your treatment; one way is to have general practitioners provide routing care. Secondly, therapy can be administered through special anticoagulation therapy units at the hospital. Lastly, self-management is a solution. Self-management is a concept where the patient takes an active part and leading the treatment. The self-management patients experience a significant difference in the overall quality of life both psychologically and physically.

Purpose: The aim of this thesis is to identify the needs of anticoagulant patients in relation to the fulfilment of their own treatment and to quickly become self-managing in order to develop a technology that supports the user’s needs.

Methods: The methods used in this thesis are based on the Rapid Contextual Design. The development of this technology is based on an iterative and user-centred design. The study is empirically driven by observations from two Danish hospitals and interviews from a group of six patients in anticoagulation therapy. The theories used to discuss main issues and challenges in developing technologies are eHealth literacy, information ecology and learning theory.

Results: The result is a design proposal for an application for patients in oral anticoagulation therapy, showed by an interactive prototype. The application contains the education program, statistic material, INR-measuring and a communication function. The first prototype was in paper and evaluated in four iterations with four of the six patients. The second prototype was in a web-based version developed in the program Axure and evaluated in two iterations with two experts and two of the four patients.

Discussion/Conclusion: The application has the potential to support the patients that are willing to take control of their treatment. By giving the patient the anticoagulation education as an application, they have the opportunity to start with the education immediately and they don’t have to stay on the waiting list. They will obtain a quicker self-managing.
