DIKU Bits: What is causality?

Speaker

Jonas Peters, Professor at the Department of Mathematical Sciences, UCPH

Abstract

In the field of causality we want to understand how a system reacts under interventions (e.g. in gene knock-out experiments). These questions go beyond statistical dependences and can therefore not be answered by standard regression or classification techniques. In this talk we will learn about the interesting problem of causal inference.

No prior knowledge about causality is required.

Which courses do you teach (BSc and MSc)?
Recently, I taught MASD and MAD (both BSc, DIKU). Out of the courses I teach at MATH, maybe Optimization in Data Science (MSc) and Causality (MSc) could be relevant for DIKU students.

Also, next year, I will teach SS in the new Bachelor program "Machine learning og datavidenskab" (BSc, DIKU & MATH).

Which technology/research/projects/startup are you excited to see the evolution of?
Applications of machine learning/AI in the natural sciences.

What is your favorite sketch from the DIKUrevy?
I have to admit that so far, I only attended the Matematikrevy. But I am sure DIKUrevy has some nice songs, too. I love music!
