PhD fellow in Runtime Verification

Department of Computer Science, Faculty of Science at University of Copenhagen is offering  PhD scholarship in Runtime Verification commencing 01.01.2021 or as soon as possible thereafter.

Description of the scientific environment

The PhD project will be hosted by the Software, Data, People & Society (SDPS) Section, which performs research in software, process, and data management systems. We focus in particular on methods for the development of trustworthy software systems that closely match the needs of developers, users, and society. Project description

Online monitoring is the task of identifying complex temporal patterns while incrementally processing streams of events. Tools that solve this task are called monitors. They input a temporal pattern’s specification, process the stream event-wise, and output verdicts that indicate for each event whether a pattern occurs at the event’s position in the stream. For complex pattern specifications, a monitor’s verdict output can be hard to understand and any argument for the verdict’s correctness must rely on the correctness of the algorithms implemented in the monitors. The goal of this PhD project is to develop efficient monitors for expressive pattern specification languages whose verdict output contains additional information that makes it easy to explain and understand the verdict. The project will build upon initial results by the principal supervisor and collaborators, which use proof trees as explanations for monitoring verdicts. The project is expected to both develop new efficient algorithms for computing proof trees and to implement these algorithms in a monitoring tool with an interactive graphical user-interface to help users understand and explore the computed proof trees.

The ideal candidate for this position is an enthusiastic student with a strong background and interest in one or more of the following areas:

  • formal methods, specifically runtime verification,
  • automata and formal languages
  • information visualization

Candidates with a strong theoretical background in related areas are also encouraged to apply.

The PhD position is funded by the Novo Nordisk Foundation as part of a Start Package Grant.

Job description

The position is available for a 3-year period and your key tasks as a PhD student at SCIENCE are:

  • To manage and carry through your research project
    Attend PhD courses
    Write scientific articles and your PhD thesis
    Teach and disseminate your research
    To stay at an external research institution for a few months, preferably abroad
    Work for the department

Formal requirements

Applicants should hold an MSc degree in Computer Science with good results and good English skills. As criteria for the assessment of your qualifications emphasis will also be laid on previous publications (if any) and your educational background in the relevant areas.

Terms of employment

The position is covered by the Memorandum on Job Structure for Academic Staff.

Terms of appointment and payment accord to the agreement between the Ministry of Finance and The Danish Confederation of Professional Associations on Academics in the State.

The starting salary is currently at a minimum DKK 331,125 (approx. €43,750) including annual supplement (+ pension at a minimum DKK 53,811). Negotiation for salary supplement is possible.
