My research is focused on using remote sensing to study non-forest trees in dryland ecosystems. As part of the TOFDRY project (Trees Outside Forests in Global Drylands), we will be using high-resolution satellite imagery coupled with deep learning to perform measurement of individual trees at a very large scale.

The aim is to quantify the effect of dryland trees on the local and global carbon cycles, in order to understand their role as a carbon sink. In addition we will be studying the ecological and socio-economic services provided by non-forest trees, and possible impacts of changing dryland tree dynamics.
