Speaker

Sven Karlsson is Professor of High Performance Computer Systems at DTU Compute, Technical University of Denmark (DTU). He received a PhD from KTH, the Royal Institute of Technology, Sweden, in 2004. His research interests are in programming models, architectures, operating systems, and system software for parallel computers. He has more than 60 publications in these fields. Karlsson has been involved in the development of several hardware and software systems that have been commercially exploited. More recently, he has become interested in quantum computing and how it can be integrated with high performance computers. He was a research leader and line manager at Ericsson, where he led work on machine learning and cellular communication. Karlsson has served on numerous conference and workshop program committees and has organized several workshops, including the workshop for Open Source Supercomputing and the Workshop on Post-Exascale Programmability.

Title

Integrating High Performance Computing and Quantum Computing

Abstract

Quantum computers, QCs, come with the promise of a substantial increase in computational capabilities compared to classical computer architectures for a range of suitable problems. They therefore have the ability to make significant contributions to the field of High-Performance Computing, HPC. On the other hand, though, quantum computing alone cannot achieve this goal, as it requires current and future HPC systems to function. As a consequence, we need a close integration between the quantum computing and the current HPC ecosystems, to form an integrated HPC/QC approach capable of bringing the combined computational abilities to a broad user base. In this talk, the most important challenges in HPC/QC integration will be discussed along with the current state of the art.
