What's the deal with ethics in computing (and AI)?

Abstract

There is general agreement that ethical concerns represent important considerations in the development of technical systems, but what does this really mean for computer science? My work focuses on the challenge of translating the ideals of ethics, fairness, privacy, and responsibility into computer science in practice. In this talk I will discuss when and how technical challenges can become ethical concerns and why we can't treat ethics as a "problem to be fixed".

Bio

Irina Shklovski is Professor of Communication and Computing in the Human-Centered Computing section. Her projects address AI-driven futures, responsible and ethical technology design, online data leakage, information privacy, creepy technologies and the sense of powerlessness people experience in the face of massive personal data collection.
