Software

Research output: Chapter in Book/Report/Conference proceedingBook chapterResearchpeer-review

Software is a term collectively used for all kinds of programs that run on a computer on all levels from operating systems and device drivers to end-user applications. This is in contrast to hardware, which covers the physical (electronic) components that are used to build a computer. Programs are represented as data that are interpreted either by hardware or by other programs that, in turn, are interpreted by hardware. As computers have proliferated and become more capable, the number of software products has undergone massive growth in a global market. At the same time, the social impact of computers and software has deepened, as many everyday activities now involve digital interactions using software on computers of all kinds.
